Day 1 :

Nairobi to Shamata Gate & Ascent to Karuru Falls

How physically fit do I need to be for this trek?

This is a demanding, high-altitude expedition designed for experienced hikers in excellent physical condition. You must be prepared to hike 25-32km per day for four consecutive days with a daypack, over steep, rugged, and often muddy terrain at elevations between 2,500m and 4,001m. Prior multi-day hiking and camping experience is essential.

What is the maximum group size?

To ensure safety, minimal environmental impact, and a high-quality experience, we operate with a maximum group size of 8 clients. This allows for personalized attention from our guiding team and manageable camp footprints in the fragile alpine ecosystem.

What kind of weather and temperatures can we expect?

Weather in the Aberdares is highly unpredictable and can change rapidly. Even in the dry season, be prepared for cold rain, strong winds, and persistent mist. Daytime temperatures may range from 5°C to 15°C (41°F to 59°F). Nighttime temperatures at high camps (Lake Gura, Elephant Hill) can drop to below freezing (0°C / 32°F or lower). Proper gear is non-negotiable.

Is there a risk of altitude sickness?

Yes. The trek reaches 4,001m at Satima Peak. While the itinerary allows for gradual ascent, altitude sickness (AMS) is a real risk. We build in acclimatization time, but it is vital you are familiar with the symptoms and communicate openly with your guide. A pre-trek health check and adequate hydration are crucial.

What is included in the porter service for my personal gear?

We provide porters to carry all shared camp equipment (tents, food, kitchen). Each client is allocated a 15kg (33lbs) personal duffel bag for the porters to carry. This should contain your sleeping bag, clothing, and other non-essential daytime items. You must carry your own daypack with daily essentials (water, layers, camera, snacks).

What about wildlife safety?

The Aberdare is home to buffalo, elephant, and other wildlife. Our guides are highly trained in bushcraft and safety protocols. Camps are set up in designated or carefully selected safe areas. You must follow your guide’s instructions at all times, especially regarding movement around camp after dark.

Can the itinerary change?

Absolutely. The safety of our clients and staff is paramount. The lead guide has full authority to modify the route, camping spots, or summit attempts based on weather conditions, trail status, or group health. We plan for the highlights, but the mountains dictate the final schedule.
